Light Reading: Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

In light of ongoing real world events it was inevitable that they would drag out a history book for historical parallels.

Edward Gibbon described the Goths’ sack of Rome in August 410AD: “ … In the hour of savage licence, when every passion was inflamed, and every restraint was removed … a cruel slaughter was made of the Romans; and … the streets of the city were filled with dead bodies … Whenever the Barbarians were provoked by opposition, they extended the promiscuous massacre to the feeble, the innocent, and the helpless…”
The suggestion that Europe is a decadent Civilisation top heavy with wealthy despots riding on the backs of slaves while an inept and underfunded army struggle to hold order while taxes are squandered on stadiums and Barbarians wander the streets butchering the most vulnerable is a superficial parallel at best. It's failure was in that multiculturalism and freedom are the first things sacrificed. Multiculturalism comes under attack by those who don't like it, therefore it must be multiculturalism that is flawed. wrong.

Consensus of all the people is the only way forward.
