Linguistic Archaeology: The United States of America

That would be a serious undertaking... but we know where it is. It has a less than 2% fully literate population, religious fundamentalism, innequality, a poorly educated ruling class, and is enjoying progressive decline as the global resources that have given its middle class populace a way of life that enjoyed 29 acres per person in supporting resources on a planet at 1 acre per person (contributing to global innequality) are being increasingly redirected elsewhere, collapse would be innevitable.

China on the other hand is as a communist state functioning at half an acre per person.

So what is the most likely point of conflict? Australia. At an Equal share of one acre per person Australia is at about the land territory share of Tasmania. That means Mainland Australia belongs to someone else.

The USA needs land and resources to continue with its Capitalism works world-view, and Australia is already in the process of being absorbed culturally and through Military alliance by the USA. It's not going to Reduce its resource burning way of life and embrace Communism. It will always need more... And the America First policy is an increasingly popular opinion amongst its Elites and fundamentalist population.

The Chinese on the other hand are Descended from Indigenous Australian females of the north west Australia, and having migrated north have likely done so repeatedly over the last sixty thousand years depleting local resources. They being the core of human migration out of Africa could argue that equality of territory and resources is obligatory in the United Nations pushing the wealthier nations into a future of unethical conflict for more than their resource share.

The only way to stop that is make a Doctorate education mandatory for every US citizen (And all the others on this planet) by directing immediatly half its defence budget to doctorate education of its military, who will then teach the rest of the population, ban religion, restrict freedoms (to life confinement to an acre, or a shipping container sized single occupancy apartment so you can enjoy living in the only city, and nationalize all corporate assets and the wealth of billionaires and hand it to SpaceX who would need to be declared the Government of Mars (under God-emperor Elon Musk) so they can commit to Mars colonization while Communism is imposed on the humans of Earth.

The Doctorate population can be rewarded with a seat for life in parliament combined with an obligation to teach others to a doctorate level.

Change needs to happen now.

P.S. If the world immediatly halts the harvesting of forest to stop ocean level rise, the USA has less than ten years of pulpable forest to provide its citizens with toilet paper.

Short Fiction: the Orville 4-2-01

Part 1: Gordon Malloy's Daughter

"Kelly!" The old man shouted over the friction of the atmospheric abrasion scouring the outer hull of the ORVL with whatever it was that made up the planetary dust storm. "How are we on Altitude?"

"Sorry Sir, the Laser Altimeter is non-functional." Kelly Malloy pulled the package from her pocket and checked the readings on the device. No matter what was happening with every other piece of hardware, the device her father had gifted her could cut through almost every distortion and interference. "Back-up says five minutes to ground."

"All right," The old man smilled. Gordon Malloy who had by a strange set of circumstances, been hurled backwards through time with a few pieces of technology was happy to watch his daughter use the portable scanner that he himself had employed through the years in various circumstances. He had employed it to locate the minerals needed to construct the drive ring that had carried his little ship through interstellar space to this very World. A ring that would function to slow their descent. "Throttle up for landing."

"Throttling up." The ORVL broke through the dust storm as its descent slowed and Kelly instantly found herself surrounded by forest covered mountains which to Kelly were almost earth-like. "Thats Beautiful!"

"Mochlas is a beautiful world." Gordon vaguely remembered the shape of it from a time long past and cried at the memory. They had been amazing years. "Now activate landing cycle automatics or we die."

"Shit," Kelly activated the automatics and the ORVL halted mid-air, and slowly turned until she could see an actual Alien city she hadn't noticed until now. "That is an actual... Aliens!"

"Oh yeah," Gordon laughed at what he realized was going to be his Daughter's first time. The Automatics then moved the ORVL slowly forward to what appeared to be a large open plaza that Gordon recognized instantly. The landing co-ordinates he had used to land a shuttle long ago on this very world were now the ORVL's presets. The ORVL touched down softly. "This is going to be great."

"Landing is good." Kelly turned and nodded at the old man who had single handedly designed the ring drive that had raised humanity out of the darkness out of some sense of gratitude on behalf of every human past, present, and future and cried. After a while Kelly returned her focus to the ship controls and checked the ship reactors. They appeared to be stable. "Placing Reactors in stand-by mode."

"All right then," Gordon Malloy slapped a hand on the Back of his still traumatized daughter. "Time to get you suited up and deploy the loading dock."

...

"This is it Kelly," Gordon activated the environmental suits and cracked the access hatch on the first, holding it open for his daughter. "Are you ready to meet your first Moclan?"

"Yes Sir." Kelly Malloy placed both hands on the handholds above the hatch into the biosuit and lifted her feet above the edge swinging them down into the suit legs. Kelly dropped forward sliding her arms into the arms of the suit and her head into the helmet making all the necessary movements until she felt comfortable and the suit comms came on. "Yes Sir I am."

"Well then let's deploy the loading dock." Gordon Malloy easily slid into the Biosuit and sealed up. A touch of the button on the wall within arms reach and the loading dock with its folded access ladder descended outward revealing the Moclan Spaceport that Gordon recognized. "Loading Dock deployed."

"And now the ladder..." The platform level, the ladder package pivoted up and unfolded. The end of it dropping to the ground. "...is deployed."

"Kelly Malloy," Gordon smiled. His daughter would achieve a lot of first times. "You are go for EVA."

"I am go for EVA." Kelly repeated the words as she detatched the biosuit from its socket, and walked out onto the loading dock to the ladder handholds. Manouvering into position, Kelly began her descent. "I am go for EVA."

"I am on the surface." Kelly breathed in and out excitedly as she stepped from the bottom of the ladder. The realization hit her. "I am on the surface of Moclas."

"Greetings from the People of Planet Earth." Kelly had been practicing the words she planned to say since childhood. And she could only whisper them to herself as a Moclan approached. She had refined them down through the years, and then tossed them aside and come up with words that were not as weird. She struggled to whisper the words. "Greetings from the People of..."

"Okay," Against the instructions of the old man now in the biosuit next to her, Kelly cracked the seals on the helmet and slipped the headwear under her left arm causing the Moclan to be startled by the sight of the unfamiliar Alien species with long red hair. Kelly Malloy raised her right hand and spoke the practiced words of her childhood. "The river of the Universe carries us to these lands unknown."

"I don't quite understand." The Gruff Moclan looked over at the other Alien still with a helmet on and back to the Alien Space Princess with flame red hair. "Do you mean to say you are lost?"

Art folio: Emergent book Cover

Why emergent? Just because a bunch of cave art can depict concepts in physics like something emerging from a singularity. The very Idea that civilization might have already crashed, or been thrown into the stone age by a rival...

And now they are coming.

That built up to a muddy and murky space image of a space station in a dim lit star system.

Linguistic Archaeology: giving sounds to symbols in a cave

Apparently these are some of the most common symbols across caves around the world... but how do you give them Spoken sounds?

Ideally you go to the most common values in the dev. Chains associated with words and phrases and match them to the symbols.

Assuming the cross-hatch means to weave, we can apply the 'Ae' phonetic sound which we get from 'to weave'. Likewise if that is 'tree' we can apply 'Ar' to it.

To weave -tree (bark used by come people in cloth-making) might be:

  • Ae-Ar
  • Ar-Ae
Finding these on a cave wall could be medicine made from chewing the bark used in cloth making, or it could be plant fibers used to weave baskets and cloth, it could be fishing net.

It becomes a symbol-phonetic matching game. And based on a few of those symbols I'm probably going to have to look up snake, zig-zag, and testicles.

2022 Memes: that moment you realize they thrive on carnage

A Coral Reef thrives because the living have the dead to cling to.

Startrek Memes: Garak was the Mythological Shape-shifter

The Mythological Shape-shifter is not the same as Odo the Shape-shifting Alien. It is alluringly more than it appears to be.

Frantic Pink: The Bobs Burger Rabbit Hole

If you have not seen it, go watch the damn thing. For those who have we need to go to the end of the movie. The very end. When Tina is struggling to breath as we are introduced to her riding on her dream horse with her Sexy Zombies and Jimmy Junior.

It means, alone in the dark, she was the last.

Its also why Louise was lied to by her parents. They said those things so she wouldn't hold on to the pain and anger when she went.

Short Fiction: Daryl Braithwaite

Title: Daryl Braithwaite

"Fuck." The Cadillac rolled to a dead stop on the dirt road. Daryl Braithwaite stared at the road ahead as the car's headlights grew dim and went dark. There was no Moon and any Stars were obscured by pollution. The landscape vanished. "Fuck."

"Well..." Daryl wound the window up and locked the door. Then with the seat tilted back, he settled in for the night. There was nothing he could do until morning. His eyes closed, he listened to the sound of his breathing. "...Shit."

The sound of a small rock impacting on the glass of the Cadillac's window drew him back to reality. Even with his eyes wide open it was still pitch dark. He reached up with his hand and ran it across the inside of the windscreen glass to see if it had cracked. The sound of his fingers wiping across a mild moisture that was condensing on the safety glass. He felt... nothing in the way of cracks.

Still, he had heard it. The sound of a small rock hitting the glass of the car window. Maybe a bat. Or a meteorite. Or volcanic ejecta. Or space junk. Daryl rested in the dark with his eyes open. There were plenty of assholes in this part of the world. It could just as well be one of them.
Exhaustion caught him as he listened to the sound of his own breathing and his eyes closed.

Again the sound of a small rock striking the window of the Cadillac woke him to the pitch black environment of the Cadillac Interior and the darkness beyond it.

He reached across to where he knew his glove compartment was and quietly opened it. Daryl felt about, the sound of his hand causing the objects within to move about filled the car. He retrieved the revolver and a pair of bullets floating loose with it. Daryl's hand slipped open the drum magazine and he inserted the two bullets and slipped the drum back into position.

Again his breathing became the only sound he could hear within the dark interior of the car. He certainly wouldn't hit anything if he took a shot in the dark. He reached up and tried the key in the ignition, the sound of its turn to the start position was as expected though he got nothing from the electrical system or motor. Nothing was turning over.

Through the glass of the windscreen he could see two distant red tail lights. There was no sound of a vehicle as they backed slowly toward the Cadillac through the darkness, growing slowly in brightness and size until they illuminated two obvious radial cracks in the windscreen. There was the clear and present evidence of a pair of impact fractures on the windscreen glass.

Daryl sat in the dark, staring at the two tail lights of the distant vehicle, the handgun tight in his hand, his breathing the only sound.

A line, illuminated red by the tail light was slowly scratched downward from the left impact fracture as though someone was scratching the glass windscreen with a stone, the distinctive scratching sound passing through the windscreen glass.

A second line scratched downward from the right impact fracture again illuminated by the red glow of the tail light from which it originated. Daryl sat in the car, his gun pointed now at the glass windscreen between the two impact fractures.

A third line scratched its way, left to right joining both lines about half way down.

And then, a line angling down from the left impact fracture before bending upward and then three lines one after the next forming a primitive hand at the end of an arm.

And now from the right impact fracture gave birth to a line angled outward and down before turning upward and then dividing into the same three fingered hand.

Daryl starred at the symbol of a man-like figure, it's hands raised and open in surrender now scratched into the glass of the windscreen, and illuminated by the red tail lights.

"Daryl Braithwaite." The voice like stone scratching on glass. "Twenty Seven."

"Flagstaff..." Officer Jacob Petty stared at the corpse laid back in a sleeping position in the otherwise beautiful Cadillac as he photographed the details of Daryl Braithwaite's drivers license into his phone and dropped it into an evidence bag. "...resident."

"Last seen at the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino." Jacob stared at the handful of hundred dollar bills laid out on the passenger seat. It was about a thousand dollars worth. Jacob photographed the currency before placing it in an evidence bag. "Apparently he drove south toward Meteor Crater about twenty miles."

"The firearm in his left hand..." Jacob took a photograph of the gun gripped tightly in the left hand of Daryl Braithwaite. "...is an old police issue revolver."

"Looks like something impacted on the windshield." Jacob photographed the two impact fractures on the windshield, their cracks lined with blood. "No wounds apparent on the body."
