Basic Expert: The Kobolds of the 1st Age

This dog-faced humanoid species is inherently intelligent. Described as hairless in the Basic D&D manual, this is down to a mange epidemic and most healthy Kobolds have a brown fur coat that makes them look more like halfling sized wolf-men.

Conclusion: These early Kobolds are descended from a Gnoll clan isolated on a shrinking land-mass that, thanks to rising sea levels, became a small Island (the lost Ancient Gnoll home mountain of Huuaauh!). The Gnoll population have died off leaving one kobold female and two male partners.

Huuaauh!
The Island is dominated by caves and caverns, the larger of which have subsided due to earthquakes, or been abandoned. The Kobolds took to living in small caves where larger Gnoll predators could not venture. They avoid the larger caves out of an irrational fear that there are still Gnolls on their island.
