Optional Rules should allow players to cheat the bad dice rolls of their starting characters utterly, but doing so should come with benefits, particularly campaign story development.
The PC rolls 30gp on starting gold but wants more? Fine, they fall through rotted floor boards in the family house and find 42 antique gold coins each worth 2.5gp (105.25gp). The coins are 500 years old. Just having these coins of an exterminated royal family line who ruled these lands before the current despots marks your family and you as traitors. Spend them all you like... but once it gets back to the people at the top that these coins are in circulation, Assassins come looking for the source.
