Habitable Space: A deep space transport pushes across the Mkun Empire...

Crappy Manga: You see a beholder in an alley-way...

The Red Light District beckons to you...

Bad Astronomy: the Galactic Habitable Zone

A star has a certain luminocity, and as a consequence there is a region around that star beginning at distance x and ending at distance y that is neither too hot or too cold for earth-like temperatures to exist.
The greater the luminocity of a star, the greater the distance that habitable zone is from the star, and the wider that habitable zone is. This also applies to the galactic centre.

Lets consider a galactic centre luminocity of:
L*=1,000,000,000,000,000,000

As a consequence its galactic habitable zone begins at around ten thousand light years from the galactic centre with a temperature of 320K (46 degrees C) and extends outward to 13.674862 thousand light years at a temperature of 274K (0.85 degrees C).

Examining the habitable zone galactic map: Twenty thousand light years of the Norma Arm fall within the Galactic Habitable Zone along with two smaller regions: ten thousand light years, and two thousand light years. Thats about five hundred by five thousand stars or two point five million star systems in a shared habitable zone. It means that section of the Norma Arm will most likely develop interstellar civilization.

                                  Galactic Habitable Zone
Inner Limit        Outer Limit     Our Solar System
GSA**                       10,000ly         13,674.862ly     26,700ly +/-1300ly
Temperature (K)      320°K                274°K                       199°K

**Galactic Semimajor Axis

You are thinking what the hell, there is no way the temperature in our solar system has a temperature in space of 199°K, but our star has a hydrogen boundary formed by the ignition of the star with an Albedo of 0.9-1 so its interior is somewhere between 0°K-122°K not including our own Solar Luminocity effects...

Where are we?
We are about 13,000 light years beyond the galactic habitable zone. So if the habitable zone has earth like temperatures no matter where you are (beyond the habitable zone of individual stars) in any solar system within that habitable zone, it is practically oozing with the conditions for life. If we were in the habitable zone we would have life on Titain, Mars, the moons of Jupiter, even Pluto. And we wouldnt be the only ones enjoying warm weather. There are considered to be ten million stars within 3.2 light years of the galactic centre. So out there are million of stars in the galactic habitable zone straddling the spiral arms between us and the centre.

You wonder why Aliens are not contacting us? They live in the Galactic Habitable Zone. From their perspective the Galactic Habitable Zone is the only place to find life. You can literally travel from habitable planet X to habitable planet Y and its survivable... remember those starships with Agriculture farms? Yeah, them. They are sustainable technology for movement not just between Planets, but between Solar systems. All you need to do is hold in the Atmosphere and water, and be prepared to spend a million years travelling from solar system X to solar system Y.

The question is, why are we not in that habitable zone?

       Lux,

Conclusion
Light begins in Pashto at 50% (as *A) though not intact,
At 29% Light appears fully formed in the Southern Sotho language (as Leseli) in south africa. Sel- is the protoindoeuropean word for Settlement. It probably means protoindoeuropeans migrating into south africa and spotting a settlement by its light became part of the community or settled the region.
Light then spreads north-east to tamil in southern india, and north-west to irish, and bangala in congo before spreading globally... this suggests coastal sea travel connecting coastal peoples: ireland? - congo <-south africa-> southern india without interacting with the peoples between these groups. The irish are not necessarily in Ireland at the time of language development.

Latin is the last to discover light (lux).

Dungeon Mastery: how to cook a one eyed egg

As you are probably going to spend more time at home, I suggest an electric sandwich grill. Previously I detailed the egg and cheese burrito cooked on a sandwich grill (new years eve). Now I suggest learning how to cook a one eyed egg.

Step 1: get eggs, bread, butter. Butter sliced bread. Plug in the electric sandwich press (or heat a frypan over a fire).
Step 2: cut squares in bread and place crusts and squares butter side down on sandwich grill.
Step 3: Break eggs into the holes.
Step 4: lower sandwich grill and cook for a few minutes untill cooked.

A beetle could structurally descimate a stone fortress in a year if un-noticed. If encountered on a stone surface, likely by accident considering their stone-like camouflage, contact with their antennae will require a successful save vs petrification or turn to stone.
If encountered in a Dungeon or cave, the cave or dungeon should be considered at critical subsidence- so any damage will trigger subsidence.

Dungeon Mastery: The Tower of the Horticulturalist

It rose up from the jungle floor in some distant place far from civilization and drifted on the winds through the sky. A simple tower like structure over grown with foliage, except that it sat on a giant root bulb a hundred feet in diameter from which dangled roots a hundred and fifty feet long. And all the while the plant dropped boulder-sized seeds which devastated agriculture by germinating.

The Horticulturalist: 18th Magic-user Lawful; 40hp; Str 7, Int 18, Wis 19, Dex 12, Con 10, Cha 13; physical height 5'; spells: ; Description: Starlkun the Horticulturalist has the appearance of a short, elderly, senile old man with a long white beard and a bald head. His brown earthen robes have a royal purple stain to them. This is a result of the plant extruding a natural dye. Starlkun will not allow anyone to destroy his flying home.

The Horticulturalist's Tower is overgrown with foliage. The leaf structures wind up through access stairways forcing Starlkun to resort to dimension door to get around.

Dungeon Mastery: Anime Dungeons

In Konosuba Kazuma and friends recieve a dungeon map of Keele's Dungeon as a reward from the Adventurers guild...

It looks like someone simply slapped together a map generated by a map generator with no discernable entrance, or marks other than various smudged out points, and a big red X indicating a secret door to a hidden area.

Keeles Dungeon
The entrance has a quality to it that looks like an ancient temple overgrown by a giant hundred foot diameter banyan tree.

The entrance descends down a long straight staircase into the dark. Its all slapped together without too much thought to the realities of what lies beyond, or how it is accessed.

Dungeon Mastery: The Kingdom of Thain

A shaft hidden in the roots of the great tree descends into Weirguard providing access to its three vaults... its secrets guarded by giant leeches, spiders, and snakes.
The Secret Way is a narrow path up a mountain ridge from Weirguard, a distance of 4.1 kilometres to the Great-keep of Thain...

Unknown Archaeology: The Kingdom of Thain

The weir actually connects by a natural trail along a ridge line 4.1 kilometres to an even more significant Archaeological site.

Our little weir on the river...

Located 4.1 km away from the Weir along the mountain ridge trail is a partly buried hexagonal earthworks about 500ft in diameter. Seems ideal for a fortress. The visible road actually goes back toward the weir but stops at a what could be a third archaeological site. It seems someone has been accessing these archaeological sites. They are located in eastern india between Bhutan and Bangladesh.
The fortress and the Weir gives them control over the mountain trail that links both.

The whole thing feels medieval... its south of the Forest of Thain, so lets call this the Kingdom of Thain.

Conclusions: at 34% the earliest names creatures are Karkros (Crab), Eroros (Eagle), and Kerkos (Hen). They are at this point coastal, tropical, likely around mangroves which are habitat for crabs.
At 24% we find Elor (Swan), and Elen (Red Deer)  they are heading inland because swans are not seabirds, but can be wetlands dwellers or lake dwellers...

Dungeon Mastery: Building realistic maps

An exploration of the wilderness on Googlemaps and we find this odd hexagon shape on the edge of a river positioned near a 'natural weir'.
The hexagon with a giant tree is a hundred feet in diameter.

A pen drawing of what can be seen is easy enough. Its not totally accurate.

Then we just colour it with appropriate terrain colours generating a reasonable wilderness map providing us with the ancient ruins of some hexagonal based fortress or temple on a river. An ancient tree grows through the ruined structure hidden beneath its branches. The weir could do with some repair,  There is an access bridge about ten feet wide and twenty feet long crossing the moat.

Enjoy...

Basic Expert: The Greatshield

The Greatshield
This is a large, heavy steel shield which weighs twice the weight of a regular shield (20cn as opposed to 10cn), providing a +1 AC bonus as an ordinary shield as well as special counter-damage to any opponent equal to 1hp/Damage Dice of an opponent's melee attack.

Cost: 100gp

Example: Shield-Maiden Maple is attacked by a warrior with a Battle-Axe for 1d10. The Warrior successfully hits Maple for 1d10 but takes 1hp counter-damage.

Anime Memes: the harsh reality of leveling up

After letting Mr Bunny head-butt Maple in the stomach for an hour... a momentary distraction causes Mr Bunny's unfortunate demise.

1 hour = 6 Turns.
1 Turn = 60 Rounds.

Mr Bunny head-butted Maple's abs for 360 attacks only to come to a sad end when he impacted her Greatshield which inflicts counter damage.

This small, cute, Apple-coloured bunny has an apple-white fur covered body and apple-red coloured ears. Despite it's cute appearance it is agressive and relentless, attacking with its head-butt continuously until it or its opponent is dead.
Anyone taking Head-butts to the unarmoured abs for an hour (360 rounds) without dying gets a bonus 1hp for hardening up. This is a one-off reward bonus.

Public Service: Blood Donations vs the Corona Virus

If you dont have Corona Virus its a good time to think about donating blood. Particularly if you are Universal Donor with blood type O. The Corona Virus may pose a significant threat to blood donor sources. With donors increasingly infected there will be real shortages.
Imagine everyone in the world who is blood type O deliberatly infecting themselves so that those who survive can serve as a blood transfusion vaccine to the sick.
The death toll is going to be far above what you are being told. We know that Twenty percent of the infected will require critical hospital care or they will die. We also know that seventy percent of the global population face infection by this time next year. So just short of a billion people can expect to die by next year.

Therefore its a numbers game.

We can infect a million blood type O universal donors with corona virus, and risk loosing two hundred thousand donors who will need critical hospital care on the chance that eight hundred thousand type O universal donors survive and can provide blood that carries antibodies to the corona virus.

If we do it now, we can probably save that billion.
