You might not have heard of star trek: axanar which is a fan film now being destroyed because cbs and paramount grew jealous and fearful that it's fans might now throw their wealth on communally produced and owned star trek that they would lose out. But Star trek has always been a communal property since that first trekkie dressed up in a red shirt and posed for fans photos and wrote poetry about the thousand ways to die.
Yes it's a company property. It will likely be so for the next sixty years. But the world needed star trek to free it. Startrek is a cultural influence. Instead a bunch of kids just got gunned down by starfleet security for being black.
